Update -- March 12, 2010
Dear Divers, Parents, and
Supporters,
They say march comes in like a lion, and it certainly has been
true this year. Cold and windy, our workouts have been small but
nonetheless productive. We host our first meet of the season this
weekend, and then Coach Jeff heads to Indiana this coming week to judge
the Women's NCAA Championships. BJ lucks out and gets to come
along, and in the process will have access to USA Diving's National
Training Center as well...lucky him!
We have also started going to Hawaii Academy on Thursday nights 8-10 pm
-- I am doing this for myself to have fun jumping trampoline, but
several team members said they wanted to make it a weekly thing, so we
are making it happen :) Already Joanna has benefitted by doing
5233D in the belts, and BJ has played with several twisters of the
mini-tramp and seems to have a sense of how to do back and reverse
twisters now! YAY!
Also, as a result of BJ's success this season, we have had several
inquiries from kids at HSDB about diving -- we MAY have three more deaf
divers starting up after Spring Break (on March 22). so keep up
with the online ASL lessons! :)

Oh, the dizzying highs,m the terrifying lows, the creamy middles!
(Homer Simpson quote).
Maria dived very well, establishing a PB of 408 and change and taking
the silver. She was really solid except her twisters, which may
have cost her her first state title -- but I think she has it in her to
take it next year :) Her 201A and 301A paid off, and she did an
amazing 303C and 403C as well.
Ashley started off like gangbusters, doing an incredible 403C for 7s
and 5223D for 6s on the first day. She had a great 201A and 203B
as well en route to her highest-yet states score and a 5th place medal.
Cristin was hit or miss this meet, but it's nice to see that hit or
miss still puts her solidly in the finals (she finished 6th).
Hopefully, her life calms down more for next season :) She
hit a beautiful 401B and was very solid on her back and reverse vols.
She also had no smacks, which is a very nice way to have a state
meet :)
Allia gave herself a scare with some atypically "average" dives
sandwiched in between some really nice ones (great 101B for 6.5-7s,
awesome 201A for the same, nice 301C for 6-6.5s); she squeaked
into the finals in her debut States meet.
BJ was on fire -- he had only two minor "misses" -- his 301A for 6s and
his 403B, normally a 7+ dive, for 6-6.5s. In the most exciting
boys' state contest in recent memory, he picked up the silver, 2.7 from
gold. He opened with 8s on his 201A, then hit all the rest of his
vols for 7+ except the 301. He did his best-ever 105B, 203B,
5134D, and 204B, which all earned 6-7s. And he is ready to come
back next year with a vengeance and break the state record.
UPCOMING
EVENTS:
"Spring into Action" meet March 13 to get us
geared up for the competitive club season. Maui
is hosting a meet April 10, so get ready for that one, and the
HDA Championships will be May 9. The Aloha State Games will be
June 5-6 weekend, and Regionals are June 18-20 at
UCLA (Go Bruins!) and Zones are in Pasadena at my former haunt, the
Rose Bowl Aquatic Center -- to help with cost issues, I am looking into
setting up camp situations at either Rose Bowl or USC and then we can
all stay from June 18th through July 3rd and not have to make two
trips...Will keep y'all posted. Hope you are excited to make this
summer a great one for us all!
