Interscholastic Diving 2008-2009

One of the good things about our sport is that it is a part of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.  As such, there are opportunities to represent your school and compete weekly during the scholastic season.  Private schools compete in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.  Public schools compete in the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

Newsflashes:

2/2/09:

The ILH, OIA, and MIL Championship meets have concluded.  Congrats to Chelaine Eliazar and Spencer Madanay, Madison Cole and Kainoa Lopes, and Sheyenne Machida and Austin Howlett, the girls' and boys' champions of the respective leagues.

From what I can glean from the various results, there are 5 boys and 10 girls qualified for states.  The front runner in the girls' competition is returning senior Chelain Eliazar, who's had an outstanding season thus far.  battling it out for the silver and bronze are likely to be Kathryn Chinn, Sheyenne Machida, Ashley Maginot, and Maria Zarka, with dark horses in the form of Cristin Lim and Madison Cole.  The boys' contest is shaping up to be a bettle between Kainoa Lopes and Spencer Madanay, with another battle for the bronze between Austin Howlett and Beau Brians.

Good luck to all competitors, and we hope to see you all participate in this year's diving show!

1/12/09:

Last Friday's OIA Relays saw Kai and Beau (Kae-Bo) dominate in a field of one pair.  The boys did a great job, each debuting new dives (Kai did 5225D and Beau 403B).

Saturday saw the ILH Invite #2 (for varsity, #3 for JV and Intermediate).  Spencer Madanay was the lone boy  and did some outstanding stuff (403C for 6-6.5s and three incredibly difficult twisters -- 5223D, 5134D, and 5225D) -- the Punahou freshman earned his first qualifying score to states.  Kathryn Chinn won the event in a close contest with Maria Zarka, who threw a new 5132D.  Ashley Maginot, fresh from a few weeks off due to intimate contact with the board, toughed it up and threw most of her "real" optionals and won the bronze.  Cristin Lim had an OUTSTANDING event and earned a PB of 287, throwing her newly learned 104C and 5122D.  Bridget Schowalter threw a solid 104C and a really nice 303C en route to her first state qualifying score.

On the JV side, Jennifer Kumura of Iolani took it in a close battle with La Pietra's Allia Alliata.

For the Intermediates, Victoria Eliazar of Punahou dominated, with incredible jumps and a wowser of a 104C.

Sorry I don't have more details about the younger events -- I waited too long to do this update :/

1/3/09:

Today's Kalani Invite was very much full of depth and comprised divers from Kaiser, Mililani, PAC-5, Punahou, Iolani, Baldwin, Maui, and Seabury Hall!  The 9 girls and 5 boys who participated did a fine job, and 8 girls (Kathryn Chinn, Madison Cole, Caitlyn Curammeng, Chelaine Eliazar, Cristin Lim, Sheyenne Machida, Danae Olaso, and Maria Zarka) and 3 boys (Beau Brians, Austin Howlett, and Kainoa Lopes) qualified for states today!

Outstanding dives:  Kainoa's 401B and 203B, Beau's 101B and 403C, Austin's 5233D, Ryan's 5223D, Avi's 302C, Chelaine's 201A and 5132D, Kathryn's 103B, Sheyenne's 201A and 302C, Madison's 401B and 5221D, Danae's 5223D, Maria's 203C and 103B, Cristin's 401B and 403C, Bridget's 401C and 103C, Caitlyn's 402C and 301A.

12/13/08:

The ILH held its first season event at Iolani today.  It was a small 8-diver affair, attended by Iolani, Island Pacific Academy,  La Pietra, and St. Andrew's Priory.  It was also an all-female party -- Gurl Power Rulz ;)

There were three Intermediate, two JV, and three Varsity divers.  Iolani swept the Intermediate, with Amy Kimura winning, Marrisa Uyemura (who did some amazing jumps) taking silver, and newcomer Lauren Arakawa taking bronze.  La Pietra's Allia Alliata won JV with two dives (401C and 201A) earning all 7s and better from the judges, with Iolani's Jennifer Kumura taking second.  IPA's Ashley Maginot won the Varsity event, showing good form throughout her 11 dives and earning a personal best score of 346.50.  St. Andrew's freshman Maria Zarka provided some stiff competition, finishing second with 300.60 in her first high school meet, and earning a state qualifying score.  Iolani's Crsitin Lim finished third with 262.88, which earned the requisite points for state qualifying (and finished with an amazing 103C for 7s!), but her list did not have the DD -- it will come, though!  Watch for it at Kalani!
